Upcoming WhatsApp update will let you share any type of file

Image
Currently, you can share photos, audio and video files, and PDF documents on WhatsApp, but the Facebook-owned messaging platform will soon allow you to share any type of file. As noted by WABetaInfo, the update is being tested with a small subset of users, and should be rolling out to WhatsApp's 1.2 billion customers shortly. According to the publication, you'll be able to share any file with your contacts or in a group as long as it's under 128MB on Android, 100MB on iOS, and 64MB on WhatsApp Web. Presumably, the file size restriction is put in place to ensure WhatsApp's servers don't get overwhelmed by users sharing high-res movies or 4K videos shot on their phones. The update will also include the ability to share APK files, which will be of particular interest to users in India as it'll make it easier for them to pirate apps and games. WhatsApp usage is ubiquitous in the country, and the service is looking to make the switch from a messaging app to a...

WhatsApp Starts Allowing Sharing of All File Types on Android, iPhone, Windows Phone: Reports

WhatsApp has long been used as a medium to share photos, videos, and even Word docs. And for those files that weren’t supported on WhatsApp, users tend to go the long route by uploading them first on the cloud, and then sharing the link for download. There are several other workarounds, including third-party apps, to get your unsupported file from one sender to another, but it appears WhatsApp no longer wants you to use those. The company is said to be testing support for all types of file transfers (including archives) on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone with a limited number of users, removing any hindrance of file sharing on WhatsApp. WABetaInfo spotted this roll out, and claims that it’s a phased one. While some users in countries like India, Japan, Kuwait, Sri Lanka have reported that the support has arrived, there are several other users that do not see it still. However, WhatsApp can be expected to roll this feature out to everyone in the due course of time. The fi...

Here's why Chinese smartphone makers dominate Indian market

Image
The increasing dominance of Chinese players in the Indian smartphone market is reflected in their rapid growth rate which increased 3.4 times taking the market share to 51 percent in the first quarter of the year 2017 (1QCY17). Samsung Electronics has held the top position as the market leader with 28 percent share in the 1QCY17, while the market share of Indian vendors has been downsized to a mere 14 percent from last year's 40 percent. There has been a massive change in the market position of the top five smartphone players in the financial year 2017 (FY17), as Xiaomi, Vivo Mobile India, and Oppo Mobiles India have dethroned Micromax Informatics, Lava International, and Karbonn Mobiles from the top five list. Meanwhile, Lenovo has retained its position owing to its established brand and product line-up placed in diversified price segments. Oppo and Vivo India have seen massive growth with their smartphone sales which increased by seven to nine times in the FY17. ...

Apple goes after clones and spam on the App Store

Every time Apple’s developer conference rolls around we get a smattering of changes to the App Store Review guidelines . This corpus of rules can be, in turns, opaque and explicit, and has caused a decent amount of consternation over the years for developers as they try to read into how Apple might interpret one rule or another. I remember the crushing of apps like AppShopper and AppGratis, for instance, under the boot heel of rule 2.25, which forbid apps from “duplicating” the features of the App Store. AppShopper eventually returned, finding a way around the rule by adding social features — something which the App Store still largely lacks, by the way. This year the big issue appears to surround rule 4.2.6, which states that “Apps created from a commercialized template or app generation service will be rejected.” Sounds fine, right? Sure, until you start thinking about how many apps take advantage of development assistance tools like PhoneGap — or even apps that pr...
